UK’s longest-surviving Covid patient Derek Draper passes away

The United Kingdom mourns the loss of former political advisor Derek Draper, remembered as one of the nation’s longest-surviving Covid patients. Married to prominent television presenter Kate Garraway, Draper sadly passed away on January 5, 2024, at 56 years of age. Suffering a severe heart attack in December 2023, he fell into a coma, marking a new chapter in his already challenging health journey.

In early 2020, Draper was struck down by the Covid-19 virus. Admitted to an intensive care unit, he was placed in an induced coma and ventilated. The virus wreaked havoc on his body, causing damage to multiple organs, including his kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs. Complications arose from his condition, including the development of diabetes and holes in his heart and lungs.

As Britain’s longest-suffering coronavirus patient, Draper spent over a year in the hospital before returning home in April 2021. His path to recovery was arduous, requiring full-time care and ongoing medical attention. Not only did he have to relearn basic functions such as talking, eating, and moving, he also battled memory loss and confusion. Recurrent infections and complications landed him back in the hospital multiple times.

His health took a turn for the worse in December 2023 when he suffered a massive heart attack, which resulted in a coma. Tragically, he never regained consciousness, passing away on January 5, 2024.

Throughout Draper’s tumultuous health journey, his wife, Kate Garraway, and their two children, Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14, provided round-the-clock care. Despite the challenges, Garraway balanced her professional responsibilities as a TV presenter and journalist with her personal ones.

Garraway has been commended for her openness and honesty about her husband’s condition, sharing their story through various platforms, including interviews, documentaries, and social media posts. She penned “The Power of Hope,” a testament to the family’s ordeal. Throughout the hardship, Garraway demonstrated immense courage, gratitude, and resilience.

Garraway has been instrumental in raising awareness about the long-term impacts of Covid-19 and the tremendous challenges faced by carers. Her courage and positive outlook have won her praise from a broad spectrum of individuals, including celebrities, politicians, and health experts.

Garraway often referred to Derek Draper as the love of her life. She maintained hope that one day he would recover, and they would reunite as a family. Sadly, this was not to be. Despite the tragedy, Draper’s legacy lives on, remembered not only for his contributions as a talented writer, counselor, and psychologist, but also as a loving husband, father, brother, and son.
