Adrishya Jalakangal explores enduring impact of war, premieres at TBNIFF

Adrishya Jalakangal, an Indian film that grapples with the enduring impacts of war, was unveiled to the public on November 24, 2023. This Malayalam-language movie, written and directed by Dr. Biju, stars Tovino Thomas, Nimisha Sajayan, and Indrans. The film, produced under the banners of Tovino Thomas Productions and Ellanar Films by Tovino Thomas and Radhika Lau respectively, explores the anti-war narrative. The musical score was crafted by Ricky Kej, while Davis Manuel handled the editing and Yedhu Radhakrishnan was responsible for the cinematography.

The film was honoured with a world premiere at the 27th Tallinn Black Nights International Film Festival (TBNIFF) in Estonia during November 2023. This was a significant achievement as it was the lone Indian film selected for that year and marked the first official Malayalam film to participate.

The narrative of Adrishya Jalakangal, also known as Invisible Windows, delves into the life-altering consequences of war on individuals. The story revolves around an unnamed man and a woman who works in the sex industry. Both live near a mysterious factory, and as the plot unfolds, the man secures a job dealing with the deceased, unlocking his ability to converse with the dead.

Despite their challenging circumstances, the man and the sex worker form a bond, often sharing their respective life struggles. Over time, the deceased characters in the plot, including a writer and several factory workers, disclose crucial information about the hazards within the factory and societal issues.

The man attempts to raise awareness about these dangers, but faces significant opposition. The narrative then spirals into a tense situation when the sex worker fatally attacks two corrupt policemen. However, when she returns with her boyfriend, both the children and the bodies have disappeared, setting off a search involving characters from earlier in the film, including the deceased.

Adrishya Jalakangal powerfully explores the harmful effects of war and conflict on the human psyche, immersing the audience in a narrative that examines the struggles of ordinary people against the backdrop of a war-affected society. The film hit the big screen on November 24, 2023, and has since captured the attention of audiences seeking to understand complex social issues through the medium of cinema.
